A Passage to India: Shipboard Life by The British Library

http://ift.tt/2uDlbjd

The British Library’s India Office Private Papers include fascinating accounts of the lives of passengers and crew on board East India Company ships. Researchers at the University of Southampton have been working with the British Library to explore these unpublished and little-known diaries, which provide great insight into the different experiences of the journey from England to India.

This podcast showcases part of the event which took place on 19 June 2017 at the British Library. It covers the introduction to the event, and performances by the Mustard Club of extracts taken from the accounts of those on board East India Company ships – including passengers’ daydreams, loves, horrors and longings.

*Please note that there is a small error in one of the performances. The boat on which Henry Nicholetts travelled was the Monarch, not the Madras as stated in the performance.*
